The next Barlova Science Night will discussion how natural selection has shaped the genetic heritage of Estonians

On November 18, the guest for the Barlova Science Night will be Professor Peeter Hõrak, a behavioral ecology professor from the University of Tartu, and the topic will be natural selection as it applies to Estonians of the 20th century.

Natural selection occurs when individuals with certain differences have more offspring than their peers. As a result, their genes are more prevalent in the next generation compared to those whose reproduction was less successful. The discussion will focus on natural selection as it influenced the body size, lifespan, and education of Estonians born in the last century, and will also touch on the costs of reproduction.

Musical interludes will be performed by the one and only Tartu Observatory house band.

The science evening series is organized by Tartu Observatory at the University of Tartu. These evenings combine the latest science news and music with great company and a welcoming atmosphere. Science evenings are held once a month.

Admission to the science evening is free!
