60 years ago, on 14 September 1964, a festive event took place in Tõravere - an observatory complex was opened on the former hayfield, opening a new chapter in Estonian space history.

On 27 September, from 18-22, we will open the doors of the observatory to the public.

  • From 18 to 21:00 The main building of the Tartu Observatory
  • From 18 21:30 Stellaarium
  • From 19 to 21 Tartu-Tõravere Weather Station and Space Bunker
  • From 19 to 21:30 Large telescope tower
From 19 to 20 if the weather is clear we will be observing Saturn in the observation field

18:00—19:30 Popular science presentations from four scientific departments (in the main hall of the Tartu Observatory)
  • Physics of galaxies and cosmology: a cosmologist's workday (Rain Kipper)
  • Remote sensing: the whole climate in twenty minutes (Erko Jakobson)
  • Space technology: How to get to the Moon and what to take with you (Hans Teras)
  • Stellar Physics: Exoplanet Zoo (Alexandra Lehtmets)
19:00—21:00Workshops and activities (various locations on the 1st floor of the main building of the Tartu Observatory)
  • Climate model ABC
  • Eyes on Earth aka Remote Sensing
  • Circuit boards under the microscope
  • Colouring cosmic pictures
  • Assembling a model of the International Space Station from Lego blocks
21:00—22:00Observing Saturn (in the observation field near the large telescope tower)
