Registration is open for 11 courses by Tartu Observatory this spring semester. The registration closes after February 7, 2020.
Most of the courses welcome students of all majors. Some of them, however, might have advisory pre-courses.

[collapsed] Environmental Remote Sensing IThe goal of the course is to to survey modern remote sensing methods and their possible applications in estimating and monitoring of environmental variables and to learn to apply the remote sensing methods. There will be an introduction into the physical fundamentals of modern remote sensing. The methods of remote sensing and their applications in estimating the parameters of vegetation, atmosphere and water bodies and of change detection are reviewed. As a practical work, data from Sentinel series satellites are analysed with SNAP software and data from Landsat archive is explored using Google Earth Engine platform.[/collapsed] |

[collapsed] Seminar on Space and Military Technology (II)The aims of the courses are
This course is meant for students interested in space technology and space research and is an addition to the the following courses "Introduction to Space Technology" and "Security and Defence Technologies". It provides students with the ability to independently research a more specific field and present that research to other students. During the course, students will learn about space and military technology and related problems. The course is divided in two independent parts: in autumn semester, the course is focused on space technology and in spring semester on military technologies.[/collapsed] |

[collapsed] Space Technology Project (II and IV)The aims of the course are:
This course is for the students interested in space technology and applications. During the course, a special project will be planned and carried out with the aim to obtain practical experiences in space instrumentation design, standards, quality management and procedures. The course activities are related to the Estonian Student Satellite Programme.[/collapsed] |

[collapsed] Space SystemsThe objective of the course is to educate the future employees of Estonian companies and scientific institutions involved in satellite subsystem development. The course is continuation of the LOTI.05.071 "Introduction to Space Technology", providing a technically more thorough overview of spacecraft subsystems and their working principles. The course consists of lectures and seminars. The lectures will provide an overview of spacecraft systems engineering, space environment, orbits, structure design, thermal control, electrical power systems, communication systems, attitude determination, attitude control and on-board computer systems. In seminars we will tackle the following problems related to spacecraft subsystem development:1. deriving requirements, margins for an example mission, 2. designing the architecture of a spacecraft on-board computer and drawing its block diagram, 3. implementing a simple Kalman filter and PID controller, 4. planning the thermal control of a spacecraft system.[/collapsed] |

[collapsed] General Astronomy: ObservationsThe goal of the course is to give an overview of:
Students will get a hands-on experience in astronomical observations. The lectures contain basic description of astronomical optics, telescopes and auxilary instrumentation and also basics of astronomical observations. Thereafter, a general review is given about the statistical data processing methods. With the help of real astrophysical data obtained by students during real observations, data are analyzed and simple models are fitted to the observations.[/collapsed] |

[collapsed] Universe for EverybodyThe course will give a non-math overview pf present-day astronomy in its historical and cultural context. Without sophisticated mathematics, a basic knowledge about planets, stars, stellar clusters, galaxies etc. will be given. We will tell about specific role of stars in the Universe, while we actually know only 5 per cent of the real content of the Universe. We will discuss possibility of life in the Universe as well as threats to the life. The constants and laws of the nature, however, seem specially favourable for emerging life and conscious human observer in the Universe -- or perhaps in the multiverse? We will also tell about astronomy in Estonia and other countries and about hidden role of astronomy in everyday life.[/collapsed] |

[collapsed] Master's Seminar in Astrophysics (II)The purpose of the seminar is to give students an experience of working through scientific information and presenting it in an oral presentation with slides. Another aim of the seminar is to broaden the students' understanding of various topics in astrophysics. The seminar is an addition to the courses of astrophysics. Topical reviews on the problems of modern astrophysics are presented by different lecturers. The main form of the work for a student is the preparation of a report on some topical problem of astrophysics based on the analysis literature or on her/his own scientific research.[/collapsed] |

[collapsed] Large-Scale PhysicsThe course aims to introduce the large-scale physical systems (i.e., those not accessible in the ordinary laboratory experiment), and their qualitative and quantitative physical descriptions. The course helps students to recognize their previously acquired knowledge as a part of a global physical context. During the course, an overview will be given of the main geophysical and cosmic objects, their evolvement and development, and physical methods used to investigate those. The following topics are discussed: a) origin and evolution of the large-scale objects; b) physical properties and chemical composition of the Earth's interior, atmosphere and oceans; c) Sun and other solar system components, d) physics of stars, our Galaxy, other galaxies and the whole Universe. The connections of large-scale physics course with the other courses of the physics bachelor programme are also presented.[/collapsed] |
