XIII astronomy open competition

On the 16th of April 2017 started the closing ceremony of the 13th Astronomy open competition. For the first time in history the absolute winner of the competiton was a female student, namely Eva-Maria Tõnson from Hugo Treffner Gymnasium 12th grade.

She was followed by Paul Kerner from Tõnismäe Reaalkool and Carel Kuusk from Tallinna Reaalkool. From the younger students, meaning up to the 9th grade, the winner was Kaarel Kivisalu from Tallinna Reaalkool, who was followed by Leonid Zinatullin from Elva Gymnasium. Third place went again to Tallinna Reaalkool, whose 7th grader Mihkel Jakobson took the last honorable mention.

Based on these results, the Estonian team that will get to go to the Estonian-Czech Astronomy Olympiad will be selected. From there, they could go on to the XI International astronomy and astrophysics olympiad (IOAA)

The Open competiton was organized by University of Tartus School of Sciences (TÜ Teaduskool) together with Tartu Observatory and it was funded by The Estonian Ministry of Education and Sciences.
